How Long Does It Take...?
I have a foster sister whose name is Emmadene. We were like 'Jeff-&-Mutt', everything I did, she did...everywhere I went, she had to go and although she was a few years younger it was good knowing that she wanted that type of relationship.
On Feburary 2010 I received a letter from her which read,
"John I haven’t heard from you in a while I would like to to hear from you and how your family is doing that would be nice.
You have always held a very special place in my heart, and in my life because my childhood was filled with people in and out...you have molded who I have become.
You are the standard by which you have been an example with all respect.
I’ve been told I don't express feelings but trying. I hold you with all respect as well as your family.
I saw the picture of you and my mom. THANK YOU SO much it meant everything to her for you to bring your family to her
You are one of us,you are family. Love Emmadene"
My point of sharing this letter is simply:
There are times when we don't realize the things we do and the impact we have on others. Sometimes it may take a year, at times (like this instance) 38 years to realize our actions.
I was 13 years old at the time I lived in this foster home, she was 10. At 13, my drive was to be there for her, help her just by spending time, listening, laughing, crying and being the best friend I can be with her.
Whatever we do, wherever we go, whomever we meet - lead with the heart and the rest will follow.
We may not realize the things we do as EnVision, but we do have a positive impact in what we do and others are affected in a most profound way.
What a heartfelt story and I thank you for sharing it.
I mentor a young girl and I can only hope that the time I spend with her will have just as much of a profound impact as you had on Emmadene.
Thank you and God Bless.
