How Long Does It Take...?

At the age of 13 I started living in the foster care system in Portland, Oregon. The first family I lived with was a Spanish family, the Madrigal's.

The home had a lot of children come and go as it was a 'Shelter Home' or a home where children stayed at until the state determined their status or they were sent to foster homes themselves.

I left their home a year after living with them and in 2008 I visited them on a trip back home.

My Wish...Our Wish!

My life as a child wasn't always pleasant. Then again I am sure almost any child would think the same, however in my case I can truly testify the benefits of having somebody I can rely on.

I wasn't wanting to seek attention, nor really seeking affirmation or acceptance. I was needing guidance and more-so, I wanted to talk with somebody, anybody that would listen whether they actually cared or not.

I was adopted at 5 days old, lived in 4 foster homes during my teen years and retired from the Navy. Sure, I had friends and some knew of my situation, but they didn't actually know me, or accept me as me...but rather as this 'foster child'.
